360 I'm addicted to haunted house stories so when I was excited when I saw this new one. Crawley House hooked me from the beginning, although it's not what you may expect--at least not at first. The story is divided into sections that roughly correspond to major eras in the history of the house, starting with the period between WWI and WWII an ending with a section in the present.The first section lays the groundwork, and I found it extremely compelling and intense. The characters are very well drawn and complex--ones you start out loving change as you get to know them, showing flaws and traits that are appropriate to the time and place. In fact, they made me ponder again this question: do you prefer a person who is very nice but because of that niceness fails to prepare you for the realities of life; or do you prefer someone who may seem snobbish or even mean but is doing the best job preparing you for the reality of life? I mention that because I initially liked the mother in the first section, but as she revealed her snobbish side, I started to dislike her. Then I realized that in truth, what she was doing was the best thing she could do to prepare her daughters in that time period, and I had to like her again, despite her foibles. That is a complex character, and one who is obviously a product of her time period and social position. I really dislike "perfect characters" and found the characters in this book very compelling. They weren't always likable, and some did terrible things, but they felt real, and I couldn't put the book down as things went from good to bad to worse, particularly in the first section.Gillian and her family are in the present day section and have to deal with the repercussions of what happened in the house so many years before. This is where the house shows its haunted side, although I would say that the story is more of a "paranormal suspense." I say that because you care about the characters and they are in a terrible situation, but because they are largely unaware of what is happening, they are not terrified by the inexplicable events, as the child in King's "The Shining" is terrified by what he sees in the hotel. But there is a great deal of suspense and paranormal happenings that you (the reader) know are ghostly, even if the characters don't truly understand until they unravel the mystery of the house. So while it wasn't the sheer fear of "The Shining," the suspense compelled you to finish the story to find out what happened to Gillian and Sarah, her daughter.I really enjoyed the story and hope there will be others. The writing is very strong and it was a joy to read. The increasing, almost claustrophobic tension as events spiraled out of control in the first section was really masterful. I really enjoyed Crawley House and I hope you will, too.
